Unhappy How screwed am I? Please help I deleted what I shouldn't have

I was trying I was looking threw the properties of the folders in my home (root) directory. When the properties came up it said /root instead of the folder i want to look at. So I typed in /shared behind /root when I think I should have just typed in shared over top of root. I went to my / directory I saw a folder named /root/shared without looking threw it I right clicked on it a deleted it. As soon as I saw that it was deleting some files I click cancel as fast as I could. My problem now is that no programs will open and It deleted some very valuable Infomation I had stored in a mounted folder in my home directory. Now I dont think Linux has an undo for delete but please tell me there is something I can do. I know that I cut and pasted some files in there earlier and possible the files could still be in the klipper but it wont open. No programs will open for me and I only have the folder open. I have not restarted my computer yet and i am typing this post from a different computer. Is there anyting I can do to get my files back? and how do I restore what ever I screwed up.

Got Windows set up on the same system? You may be able to find an "uneraser" capable of reading Linux partitions (I used to have one on this system). Other than that I really cannot think of another solution.

I would imagine that re-installing may well be your best bet.

Oh the perils of being logged in as root When you reinstall, don't forget to create a normal user for your normal work, and avoid logging in as root
