How much space on my hard-drive would be needed by RedHat Linux 5?
 

My machine is quite old and small, having only 2Gb hard-drive, and I don't want to use ms W*nd*ws!!:newbie: :study:

It all depends on what packages u install.

but i have install redhat 7.3 on a 2g before and worked fine just be selective in ur install.

You get to select what software you can install [you can on RH9 installation anyway - not sure about 5]. I would imagine you would have more than enough space.

Question - why 5?

If you are a beginner it would be easier to get the latest distro and tone it back to suit the Hd size - ie - just take out all the fancy stuff etc - remember it is useful to install compilers and documentation etc.

I have stated RedHar lin 5 because that is what i could get, also i expect it to sit on less than 1 Gb of hard

yeah it should - although I predict it may be harder to install [not sure] AND more importantly the files [depending on what you want to use it for] may be out date - you may have to do alot of manual updating, stuff like glibc etc etc. You can dowlload it if you have cable or dsl internet.

If not - I would buy RH9 or try to get a copy of it.

drivers may be an issue too depending on your hw. Anyway don't let me scare you - give it a shot - installation may run sweet - who knows.

I have a copy of RedHat Linux 9, it came free with an English Linux magazine, but I think that is too big to go on my antique machine, only 2Gb Hard-drive! And I have been having trouble uninstalling msW*nd*ws.

I have RedHat Linux 9, How about if i use just the first of the 3 CDroms, will that give me a default R-H L 9?

I use mandrake 9.1 and I've just checked, my root partition is 1.3 Gb, but I've installed a lot of tools for compiling things. You should be able to get Red Hat 9 to fit in 2 Gb if you do like the others advise, do a minimal installation and just add what you need. But you will need to use all three CD's or it'll be hard work.

Open Office may be a large applilcation - only install it if you intend to use it - It is the GPL version of Ms Office. I would only install the ones you will use - you can check and uncheck anything you want in the install. Make sure you install a compiler like gcc from the development section - in case you ever need to install anything later.
