How long should it take to install kde on gentoo?

I started the install last night using the instructions here:

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/kde-config.xml

At this point the install is still going. It says that it will take a long time but I don't think they meant this long. Any ideas on what might be going wrong?

It all depends on your specific hardware. It could take anywhere from a few hours to days.

I am installing it on a Dell Latitude D600, with a 1.6 GHz Pentium M proc, and 512 MB RAM.

Should it take that long?

Yep ...

And if you didn't emerge X first (I suspect you didn't) you'd better go find something else to do for the rest of the weekend.

Like mentioned above, it depends greatly on your RAM, Proc, and USE flags. I just reinstalled Gentoo on my laptop. Its a celeron 1.3ghz w/ 256Mb ram. After finishing with the handbook I went straight to emerge kde (Which included X and was the whole kde package plus dependencies against my USE flags). It was about 3-4 yesterday afternoon and it finished around midnight'ish last night, so It took me about 8-9 hours.

Cool...Thanks guys.

This is my first time with gentoo I wasn't sure if this was normal or not. This is what it said on the site: "In case you wonder: compiling KDE does take a while." Understatement of the century.

like omg wow, gentoo is like, sooo fun!!!1 For future reference if you decide to endure this madness again at another time, on a desktop or something, USE flags are a big help, as is not going overboard with CFLAGS.

No kidding.

I used to compile KDE myself for the Linux distro I was using. It was on a Pentium 4 2.4GHz machine w/ 1GB RAM, but it would still take more than half a day. I would usually start compiling before I went to bed, get up, go to work, and come home to finally see KDE compiled and ready to go.
