how do you unistall a linux program?

I am still fairly new to linux, and don't get mad at me, but i was wondering how to uninstall programs you have built from source and installed. Please help me out.

Most of the time all you have to do is do: make unistall in the directory you installed it from......
but if you deleted the directory you installed it from........then you need to remove all directories and files created from it..... not sure where they are? could always dowload it again untar it and then type make unistall......... hope this helps...
