How do you start gXMMS after install?

I installed gXMMS from source, after I was told I had to install the XMMS dev-pack it went ok
DId the usual ./configure make make install....

The program installs an applet to the panel which controls the basic functions of XMMS.
But I can't figure out how to get it to show up!
(this is RH9/GNOME)
when i r-click Add/ it isn't listed anywhere
I looked around XMMS in preferences and skins and stuff but no go
And when i run gXMMS:

[robert@localhost robert]$ gxmms

(gxmms:9634): GConf-CRITICAL **: file gconf-client.c: line 545 (gconf_client_add_dir): assertion `gconf_valid_key (dirname, NULL)' failed
[robert@localhost robert]$

Not sure what that means but im assuming that it isn't supposed to be run like that

If i do a whereis gxmms:

[robert@localhost robert]$ whereis gxmms
gxmms: /usr/local/bin/gxmms
[robert@localhost robert]$

it looks like a program error to me. what happens if you do /usr/local/bin/gxmms ?

anyway, if you're using gkrellm, it has a simple xmms control plugin that works. in the screenshot, it's those player buttons.

Screenshot - Scroll to upper right.
