How do you get dvdshrink? When I try to install the package (through the mandriva install software), I get:

Sorry, the following package(s) can't be selected:

dvdshrink-2.6.0-1plf.noarch (due to unsatisfied dvdbackup)

If and when I get this going, how do I get this setup with wine? this dvdshrink containts some exe file?

This is all I have installed for DVD anything:
mingdao@silas:~$ ls -l /var/log/packages/*dvd*
But your error seems to indicate you do not have it installed.

That's all I have to do in Slackware, and I never did use Mandrake
so I can't help you beyond that point. I tried the commands as I
posted them, and have viewed the DVD it created. Always do that.

You should search <Linux> Google and the Mandrake forum here at LQ
for information on what else you have to do for that distro.

I found this in one of my <Linux> Google search hits:
Note: Remember when using Mandriva to install the xine-win32, libdvdcss2, win32-codecs and real-codecs packages using the Mandriva software installer (if it can't find them go to and setup your sources) so you can play any type of video file as well as movie DVDs.
I'll bet there's a HOW-TO somewhere on

One more tip: search the Mandrivia forum for posts by opjose --
He knows his Mandr* stuff.

Do you have wine? If so make sure its updated then download dvd shrink for windows. Open the install file it should then install dvd shrink. It'll make shortcuts on your desktop then all you'll have to do is click on the shortcut and it'll open it no prob. Once you have dvd shrink, go to open disc select the drive that the dvd movie is in (it should say the name of the movie. EX D:/BATMAN) click that it'll run the dvd you'll see this screen pop up all its doing is checking for encryption. Once thats done go to backup, select where you want to download it to then it'll download onto your hard drive. Then open k3b/naultius cd/dvd creator then drag the 2 folders AUDIO and VIDEO (Audio folder has nothing in it its ok) then put in your blank dvd burn dvd then it should be done!!

I've used wine. and I think it will work, just not 100% sure. When I got a game to go with it, wine disappeared in the menu. I don't know why. but anyway, I saw or something of that nature, saw it for windows only. that must be the one you're talking about. I'll go and install wine and drdshrink, and see where it takes me.
I'm still a noob, lol, but getting there slowly.

Edit: Downloaded the latest wine software, and this dvdshrink32win, if that's right. a 3.2 freeware.

anyway, moving on with it, I'll let you know soon how it goes

edit: what am I doing wrong? I installed wine. rebooted pc, then tried to open up that dvdshrink. all it does is show a kdebug or something and/or simply shows its busy with the taskbar open for that program, then it just closes.
