how do you install a new c compiler

how do you do this without the package management programs some of the linux distribution's package management programs suck at finding the programs i wish to install on my machine and are usually short of variety (except for ubuntu and debian but thats too easy)

Either submit packages, build packages yourself or install from source.

I don't.

However if someone really wanted too, they could start here:

why
I can see doing it ONE time for the learning experience .
what distro are you using and what problems are you having
some like SUSE have gcc 4.5 installed by default ( fedora 13 gcc4.4 )
and some older code needs gcc 4.1 to build
If that is the problem install the legacy development tools for your distro

??? please give explicit examples of this -- i have NEVER had a problem
using fedora from f4 to f11 ,OpenSUSE 11.3, Arch,CentOS 5.3,5.4,5.5
