How do you change the colors in emacs?

I am trying to change the colors in emacs to a black background and white text anytime i open a file but im not sure how to do it.
I have googled for it and came up with nothing usefull. And i cant find anything in the emacs manual or settings either.
Can anyone tell me what i need to do?

Not sure, but at a guess you probably have to edit some .el files... maybe located in /usr/share/emacs or something (depends on distro).
