How do I upgrade Kate editor on Redhat 9 without also updating KDE?

Hi,

At work our main production server is running Redhat 9. I've been searching for a powerful all purpose GUI editor and finally bumped into Kate.

It does everything I want it to do and more. Unfortunately, one feature (backup file before save) is only in the later versions of Kate, but from what I can gather this also requires a newer version of kdebase and other packages, which RH9 doesn't support.

I've searched high and low for a solution but just can't see anyway of getting this feature.

Does anyone know of a Kate plugin that would do this for Kate v2.1?

Or is there a rpm I could install with purely an up-to-date version of Kate and not all the rest of the KDE desktop?

Because it's a production server I can't really mess about with it at all otherwise someone would probably be very, very mad at me!

So if anyone can help I'd be very grateful.

TIA,

Denby.

Hi,

Well unfortunately kate is bundled specifically with release versions of KDE. Occasionally you can pull an rpm from another or newer version of redhat that gets you to the version you need, assuming no depend. errors; but it can be tricky and you might not want to play around in your situation. Take a look on rpmseek.com for newer rpm releases.

Your other option, which may be a bit better is to checkout the KDE packaging project for rpm's that meet your needs:
