how do i update mkinitrd on rh9?

i'm trying to install the 2.6.2 kernel on my rh9 box but modules w/ a .ko extension aren't getting recognized as legit modules by my current version of mkinitrd (3.4.42). it is my understanding that i need to upgrade mkinitrd, but i can't find a more recent version that will install on rh9.

how can i update my mkinitrd?

has anyone successfully run rh9 under the 2.6.2 kernel? is this even possible? do i really have to go to rh fedora project?
