Talking How do I update a program?

Hi everyone,

I had an old version of xawtv 3.54, then I download the latest version 3.68.

This is how I try and update:

I extract the xaw3.68 tar file, then I type ./configure, make then make install.
The installation is successful, but when I try and start the tv by typing xawtv in the console without going to the directory, the version show the older one, 3.54

[rocky@dhcp-365-86 rocky]$ xawtv
This is xawtv-3.54, running on Linux/i686 (2.4.7-10)

If i want to load the new version, I had to go to the xaw3.68 /SRC directory and type ./xawtv to load the new 3.68

[root@dhcp-365-86 src]# ./xawtv
This is xawtv-3.68, running on Linux/i686 (2.4.7-10)
/root/.xawtv:15: syntax error
config: invalid value for input: (null)
valid choices for "input": "television", "composite1", "svideo", "composite3"

So how do I load the new one by just typing xawtv on the console without going to the directory?

Note: I never uninstall the old xawtv before i install the newer version, I dunno how to uninstall also.

Btw, do I had to uninstall the program FIRST, before I install/update the new program? ( I mean any proggies)

Please tell me how to do that.

Thanks

Generally speaking, stuff in packages (rpm, deb, etc) gets installed in /usr while self-compiled stuff gets installed in /usr/local

The safest option is that if you install something from source, uninstall the rpm first. In this case you should be able to just uninstall the rpm. (type man rpm for the howto)
