How do I, set MPlayer as default and remove Totem?

I guess this is better suited for here now. I'm a new user of Ubuntu and have been running linux for only a month so I don't know a ton. What I want to do is:

Remove Totem? I assume something like apt-unistall totem but I'm not sure, I want that gone as it doesn't work anyway. I need something easy here or a step by step.

Second, how do I make MPlayer my default player? Or get an icon under Applications Multimedia?

I'm trecking right along and very happy now. If I could just use MPlayer to open mpegs I click on the links of while surfing? With the "other" os it's easy, in Ubuntu I'm lost and need a step by step on this as well.

Thanks so much for all this help!

you can try 'apt-get remove totem'. I believe there was an option where you can also get rid of the configuration files. try 'man apt-get', and then you can read which is the option.

Okay, 1 1/2 down and 1/2 to go!

I figured out how to remove Totem, also how to get MPlayer to open up all the MPEGs and so on that I click on!

So how do I get it to open up the files I click on while I'm browsing with firefox?

Also, if you know a good P@P that's easy to install with Ubuntu I'd be very happy!

Could you post how you got MPlayer to do that? I'm in the same situation.

you will need mplayerplugin for firefox/mozilla playback. once you build it, put the .so file in $HOME/.mozilla/plugins. Personally, (this is my opinion only), I think the totem/gxine plugins are better for playing things from the web so you might want to check them out too.

Oops, sorry. All I was actually interested in is getting MPlayer to be the default video player in Gnome, as opposed to totem.
