How do I save SLED to disk to boot auto

I downloaded the files as stated but when I try to reboot I still get to Windows XP. I want to get rid of XP and try Linux. I have never used LINUX but from what I have read it looks alot better than making Bill Gates even richer. PLEASE HELP
