how do I reformat particular partitions

I have a windows partition on /dev/hda1,
an (ext3) boot partition in /dev/hda2
and a (reiserfs) root partition on /dev/hda4

I installed the newest version of Gentoo linux (2.6.9) and I am not happy with it. I want to erase the information on my partitions at /dev/hda4 and /dev/hda2 so that I can install the next recent version (2.6.8).

How do I format the partitions at /dev/hda2 and 4? I DO NOT want to format the entire /dev/hda. I DO want to maintain the reiserfs and ext3 filesystems that exist on the partitions. I am NOT using a bootable gentoo cd, rather I am using knoppix.

Thanks.

Yes, it's so easy it's actually a little scary.
