The download came from here. it was the "source code" download.

As you can see from this link address http://prdownloads.sourceforge.net/f....zip?download, you can see it's definitely a zip file.

Hence the "how do I" question in my previous post.

regards

John

Oh I see...falcon's eye is a bit different, so you may have less hassle installing than I did (I had the classic nethack source code for multiple platforms)

for zip files I believe you can use unzip...I don't remember the syntax offhand, but 'man unzip' should give you enough to get by

Falcon's Eye

Big John:

You you have unpacked falcons eye... in the top directory (of the archive) there is a file called "read me", read it.

Configuring this system is non-trivial, BUT there is lots of help in the documentation. If you have not installed programs from source very much then you WILL find this heavy going. Try installing the terminal-only version for practise, then edit the configuration file to customise your game... it's called nethackrc or something like that, instructions are in the file.

You are correct that you must edit the distribution configuration... there are config.h type files which tell you what to do, the readme tells you where to find them. As you go through it all you will see why there couldn't just be a simple autodetect type makefile anywhere.

You have to configure the program for your OS and for the windowing system you want to use. You'll also have to get the environment variables to point to your gamespace - normally, /usr/games/lib/nethackdir or something like that. Find out what it is.

After that you'll be able to get an icon and everything for every user who wants one and it looks like Baldurs Gate. Apparently.
I havn't got it going due to a library problem...

You'll have gathered that most folks around here play the terminal version - which is very useable and configurable. You will get the best performance out of Falcon if you use this one first.

As for how to play.... the text version has a file called wisdom.scroll or similar - and Falcons Eye has a graphical front-end for it as well as context sensitive help and it's own intro once the game is running. Learning the ins and outs of the game itself is part of the fun though so few people will tell you about that
Simon
