How do I make xine work with X servers that support video overlay

I am running Debian on an IBM thinkpad T41p. This machine has a ATI video card. Either the
"vesa" or the "ati" X server driver can be used to start up X windows on this. The disadvantage of using "vesa" is that it doesn't support hardware acceleration and so playing dvd's takes up a lot of CPU. However, xine works fine with the vesa driver. On the other hand, xine plays only audio (no video) when I run it with the ati driver. How can this be fixed ?

If I use mplayer, it works fine with both ati and vesa drivers.
