How do I know which kernel this is equivelent to 2.6.9-34.0.2.EL?

Is it equivelent to 2.6.17.7?

I'm not sure I know what you mean by equivalent. But I would imagine 2.6.9-34.0.2.EL is a 2.6.9 kernel compiled with specific patches and updates by Red Hat Enterprise Linux (or CentOS).

It's most likely 2.6.9 but with some newer kernel features backported in and some RH specific stuff compiled in. Your best bet is to check the changelogs on Red Hat's website to see if they mention what they did.
