How do I know what codec files Amarok, VLC, etc. are using?

On my windows machines, streams sound as expected. But even 128k streams sound gurgly or, how do I describe it... glassy(?). They sound as though they are really 28k streams...like listening to music over your cell phone. So this raised the specter of how my Linux sound apps tie into a codec in the first place. How do I determine what codec files they use, and where they are? Can others be used?

more info what distro and what videio card and sound card. why video card is a direct link to the xorg server. Some people might think I am wrong but I have tested my generic drivers that come with the distro and the ones I built for nvidia. when using the built module from nvidia display card the issue of using ram correctly has made my sound great. The only distro I have not had this problem with is Slackware. Peter lets the true source be built. try using gxine instead of amorok ok they both use the same lib's but different progams. I have had little luck with amarock till this 12.0 slackware works great.
