How do I install skype on a Linux without root access?

I have a Linux Mint 32 bit desktop which I'm not root on (public place), and I want to be able to get skype on it. I attempted to download the dynamic version, but I didn't understand how it worked. I am also a complete linux noob, so simple directions would work. I was able to get steam successfully installed as well as teamspeak 3, so I know a bit about a linux enough at least.

Machines provided to the public are often tailored for general purposes. Respect the fact you're given access (for free). Just saying because I'm not sure those maintaining it, hell they may even be volunteers, and your fellow users would appreciate it if you're cluttering the machine up with stuff nobody else uses. Also there's a privacy aspect as you probably should make sure you've scrubbed it for any personal account and other data at the end of your session.

That said applications that are built statically contain all the dependencies rolled into one (often ludicrously large) file. Skype isn't a monolithic (or as the Other OS users would say: "portable") application, meaning it requires all sorts of libraries. If those are not installed prior to using Skype then you won't be able to use it unless you try all sorts of tricks like playing with LD_LIBRARY_PATH or using some LD_PRELOAD trick, which definitely are not things new Linux users should be doing IMHO.

Hello and welcome to lq.

Might be possible to run windows portable app version in wine if it has been installed.

Basically you are attempting to circumvent the admin's control and we tend to frown on that. The correct answer is to get your admin to install it. I'd be more concerned that ports can't be opened no matter if you did get it installed.
