How do I install on RH? SOMEONE HELP

I have successfully installed RH 8. I have some programs that I want to install but I have no idea how. Is compiling the same thing as installing? How do I do that?

Someone please HELP!!

What is the name of the app you want to install?

You got a free OS, but you need to buy a good book on Linux.

The name of the app is XBoard.

I figured that I would be able to find enough resources on the web.

Is XBoard on the RH cds? If so,mount the cd,navigate to the rpm for XBoard and r-click and choose open with package manager.
If it isnt that, where is it?

No, it isnt on the CD. It is in /home/tom

That is where the 'box' is. I havent done anything to it since i downloaded it.

I just dont know how. I am SOOO new. Please forgive my ignorance but I really want to learn this. I loathe MS

Btw - I am using the KDE GUI

acid_kewpie 11-09-2002 05:35 PM

ok, well no one has bothered to ask what the complete filename actually is....so .... what is it?

acid_kewpie 11-09-2002 05:37 PM

and i hope you're aware that xboard is NOT a chess game, it's simply a generic front end to a board game engine.

SirLostalot 11-09-2002 05:37 PM

The Complete file name is xboard-4.2.6.tar.gz

acid_kewpie 11-09-2002 05:39 PM

and of course there are full installation instructions on the homepage:

http://www.tim-mann.org/xboard/FAQ.html#[B.7]

SirLostalot 11-09-2002 05:50 PM

It is amazing to me that you would expect me to know as much as you do about this stuff, Acid. I have already admitted that I am ignorant in this area. Where EXACTLY do I type the 'oh, so obvious instructions' from the web site?
I am asking for help, not someone to make me feel like an idiot.

acid_kewpie 11-09-2002 05:54 PM

hey hey, calm down bud. i was just looking around the download site and GENUINELY found myself looking at that page. let's not get off to a bad start. Nothing is amazing, and i certainly am not implying anything about what you should know.

right click on the tar.gz file, select extract, than will unpack the archive, in the same directory as the tar.gz file. click on the xboard directory. there should be a readme, or install.txt file. read that for install instructions. open a terminal / konsole and cd /to/the/directory/of/xboard/ and enter the commmands from the readme. normally it's ./configure, make, su root <password> make install, make clean. but the readme will say exactly.

SirLostalot 11-09-2002 06:13 PM

Ok, I did as per the instructions on the site. It 'unpacked' the program into /home/tom. However, I get some errors with the configure command and the make and the make install command. It looks like this:

[tom@dhcppc0 tom]$ cd xboard-*/
[tom@dhcppc0 xboard-4.2.6]$ ./configure --prefix=$HOME
creating cache ./config.cache
checking for gcc... no
checking for cc... no
configure: error: no acceptable cc found in $PATH
[tom@dhcppc0 xboard-4.2.6]$ make
make: *** No targets specified and no makefile found. Stop.
[tom@dhcppc0 xboard-4.2.6]$ make install
make: *** No rule to make target 'install'. Stop.

That is what i get at the end of the Shell - Konsole

acid_kewpie 11-09-2002 06:19 PM

right, you need to install gcc, the c compiler, from your distro cd's. you can still get the rpms instead as someone suggested earlier...

http://www.rpmfind.net/linux/rpm2htm...p?query=xboard

rshaw 11-09-2002 06:22 PM

looks like you need to install a compiler and/or development packages first. browse around your RH discs or start your fav. package manager (kpackage, gnorpm, etc) look for gcc. (Gnu Compiler Collection).
