I'm surprised to hear someone still needs that. I've taken the so file and added to ~/.config/mozilla/firefox/plugins folder. it might not have the firefox sub dir.

Sometimes the results of an LQ search are so overwhelming as not to be usable.

Here's what I do:

Download the "for all Linux distributions" Flash tarball for your architecture from the Adobe website.

Decompress the tarball.

As root, copy libflashplayer.so to /usr/lib[64]/mozilla/plugins/

Thanks for all your suggestions, I finally managed it, but unfortunately I can't work out what I had done to make it work, it was a random link on a website that installed the plugin for me. The problem I was actually having is that adobe just downloads it as a file, but there is nothing out there that tells you where it is supposed to go, and I couldn't find a plug in folder or anything. I'm not sure if Firefox has changed it's file system or anything in the last year or so as I have never had this problem before and it was driving me nuts. Annoyingly I only need it for one site and that's Udemy for a number of programming courses, so it had to be done, there was no workaround, they use it for there courses, no other site I have been on uses flash anymore, it's outdated and quite frankly really crap. So apologies for not being able to give a solution on this occasion. As a result I don't want to mark it as solved as I think it will just add to someone elses frustration to follow a solved thread with no solution to the problem.

You're going to have 'fun' with Linux if you install things from random links on websites. That is one of the biggest malware attack vectors out there. Just saying.

The flash plugin that Mint uses for Firefox is adobe-flashplugin. It is available in the repositories.

Yes, I take your point, it wasn't a random website per se. I was in a bit of a panic and had looked at so many places yesterday, I can't remember where it was, but it was shockwave player plugin that I got in the end from a reputable site like sourceforge.

So this was the problem, I have adobe-flashplugin sitting here in the downloads folder, the problem was no one could tell me where to put it, all the file paths people have posted here are different and none of them match the file system on Mint18.2. I looked in the mozilla folder, and nothing, could not find the plug in folder.

SOLUTION
Right then, I do have a solution now, I was looking at the wrong place and I have now found the plugin folder which now contains flasplugin-alternative.so it is here:
/usr/lib/mozilla/plugins

I was looking in:
~/usr/lib/
where there was nothing.
Thanks for all your help. Now I have found it, I think after your advice, I think I will reinstall the OS (/home is now back on a different drive). I can now mark this as solved.
