How do I install a new kernel?
 

I have never installed a new kernel. The last time I used up2date utility and after I was done I couldn't boot in my old or the new kernel. My hard drive suddenly had tons of errors. I wanna learn this, because it seems like a lot of people do it.

Any links on the web might be helpful too. I am running RedHat 7.3 with kernel 2.4.18-3

The problem with kernel installation using up2date is common as well as any rpm based kernel installation of kernel. I tried it once for the sake of an experiment - rendered my system unusable. The best and I believe the only correct method of installing new kernel is compiling it yourself from source. Source can be located at http://www.kernel.org . Various kernel HOW-TO's are available on-line, at least every linux enthusiast per-uses http://www.tldp.org

Thanks, after reading the instructions, I don't think that I will update the kernel just yet. Too many steps.

How n00b are you? It is actually considered to some a "right of passage" when you first recompile a kernel without errors or fixable errors.

I read that somewhere on www.thescreensavers.com a long time ago.

Anyway, if you are comfortable with Linux, you shouldn't have much of a problem with a kernel recompile, plus it may teach you alot ;)

And that's right!!! There is nothing to be scared about there is no BSOD - only kernel panics and oopses, but if you keep your working kernel along side with your new kernel you'll always have a "backdoor" to your system
