how do i get vbetool working on DSL Linux

Hello. I need to get something going on this old toshiba 4600 laptop I have. I've got dsl linux on it for the speed. ubuntu works too, but is super slow.

My problem is that i can't get the screen to turn off after a few minutes of no activity. xset does not do anything. In ubuntu however, vbetool does turn the screen off (and i mean the power to the lcd screen). How do i get it working in dsl linux?

Also, i'm open to any other ideas on how to turn off this lcd screen. Vbetool might not be the solution i need, so please let me know if there are any alternative ways to do it.

-Thanks for the help.
