okay i'm doing some research and it looks like this MIGHT have something to do with the fact that your sound card is a 5.1...

right there where you select the output plugin, you go into "configure"... it should be in there somewhere...

When I click sonfigure there is:

Audio device (9WHich is already set to the proper one..and there is only 1 on the list anyways)

Mixer card, which is set to 0, and Mixer device, which is set to PCM, in advanced oiptions its jsut buffer time and period time.

what version of xmms are you using???

rpm -qa | grep xmms

perhaps the version you are using doesn't have the software control feature...

i get that option in slackware linux with xmms 1.2.10...

of course this isn't the main issue, though... because mpg123 is also silent...

i really do think it's related to the 5.1... i'll let you know what i find...

well i would have told you to upgrade xmms but really it's not necessary because the problem right now isn't with xmms... it's with the sound setup in general, that's why it affects mpg123 also (and probably everything else)...

i wonder if your kde event sounds work???

there the one's you configure to be played on startup and exit and when you minimize windows and all that crap... that's in the kde control center... under look and feel i think... system notifications...

okay i'll be online later today...

i'll definitely enquire some more about your 5.1 card...

meanwhile maybe someone else will contribute to this thread...

hang in there, buddy!!! DON'T GIVE UP.

(by the way i strongly suspect your card WILL work because i believe i have used the same one, except not a 5.1 version...)

one more spitball before i leave:

i was just looking at the lsmod and i'm not sure but i don't think the ac97_codec and the intel module should both be loaded simultaneously...

try doing a:

modprobe -r snd-intel8x0

or something like that, to unload the intel module and see what happens... just a thought.. i'm not sure...

let me know how it goes... i'll be back in about 9 hours i think... good luck...
