how do i find default graphics driver

Hi,

I installed a nvidia graphics driver now i cant get to my desktop.

I understand i should edit via the grub, the xorg.conf file.

nano -Bw /etc/X11/xorg.conf

This is what it looks like now:

Section "Screen"
Identifier "Default Screen"
DefaultDepth 24
EndSection

Section "Module"
Load "glx "
EndSection

Section "Device"
Identifier "Default Device"
Driver "nvidia"
Option "NoLogo" "True"
EndSection

But i don't know what i should change it back to. How would i find it on the install cd?

Try just changing "nvidia" to "nv" or "vesa". "nv" is the open source nvidia driver. "vesa" is the generic video card driver that should work on most any machine.

Driver "vesa" should use the generic driver and get you back into X. But that's not the nvidia driver. Make sure that you use the right driver 32 bit or 64 bit with nvidia. Which depends on the distro that you have installed, not the hardware that you're using. i.e. 32 bit OS, then 32 bit driver (even if you're on a 64 bit machine). Beyond that you could try creating a NEW xorg.conf "X -configure". And then compare how it differs. Not always successful, but a reference. Also check the /var/log/Xorg.0.log for obvious reasons for a failure (EE). Or maybe it didn't fail at all and your refresh rate is such that you just can't see anything.
