how do i edit gpsman.sh and gpsman.tcl

I downloaded and untarred gpsman package. Now I must edit and place application components in proper directories to make program work. plan to use /usr and /usr/share. I need to know how i should edit gpsman.tcl and gpsman.sh. I have the tclsh shell to interpret the .tcl However, I don't know what the next steps are for me to take. I've always used rpms because I couldn't get any programs to ./configure. want to master the old way of installing software into linux. BTW using suse 9.3 on an older laptop. trying to make a CarPC with GPS. Please, somebody help!
