How current are rpm and yum repositories

I am fairly new to Linux and have always been unclear about how current rpm and yum repositories are. For example, I am currently on PHP 5.1.6 and FC6. I tried to update to the latest PHP 5.2.6 but when I ran "yum update php", it didn't find any update. Is this because the rpm/yum repositories are not yet updated to include the latest PHP 5.2.6 version or is it something else? Any insights will be much appreciated.

FC6 is no longer supported is your problem. F8 support will drop off towards the end of this year as well. Fedora only runs a 13 month or so support cycle, given it's nature as a development platform.

Just so I am clear, by FC6 no longer being supported, you mean that it is no longer supported by the Fedora project? Is that when repositories stop getting updated? I thought that all versions of Fedora Core point to the same repositories but I guess not.

Yes - it is no longer supported.

Each version has its own repos.

Re: each version has its own repositories, is that true for all flavors of Linux? If so, which flavor has the longest support cycle? I can choose from the following: Fedora, Ubuntu, Centos, Debian, Gentoo.

Thanks for your insights, it's been very helpful.
