How can I restore GRUB ?
No, I don't have a rescue disk.
Can I restore Grub from the RH9 install CD ? How ? Grub was running Ok and gave me choice between XP, Win2k Server, and RH9. Until I decided to upgrade my Win2k Server to a Win2k3 Server. Now Grub is gone, and I only have the Micro$oft boot record. Thanks |
Yes just boot from CD 1 and at the "boot:" prompt type "linux rescue" and press enter. From there you shold be able to follow:

Wow! Now I am in trouble...
I used the boot from Cd. Went to the Linux-rescue mode.
Mounted my RH9 installation. Changed dir to /sbin Ran the "grub-install /dev/hda" script. Output was successful. Now I don't have grub nor the windows boot loader. Just a pitch black screen. Any ideas ? |
check your /etc/grub/grub.conf to make sure it is intact and makes sense.
you could also throw in your red hat 9 cd1 and do an upgrade, without selecting any packages even, you should be able to "update" your install of grub |
and if you don't find it there check:
/etc/grub.conf cause there is no subdirectory grub in the etc folder in redhat. |
oops, yeah, sorry about that I was thinking of /boot/grub/grub.conf
thanks for the heads-up |
