How can I put icons onto my desktop?

How can I put icons for some of the other drives in my machine onto my desk top.

If I try an copy the drive there it copies the whole drive into the desk top when all I want is a shortcut icon on the desktop so that I can launch into the drive from there.

I assume there is a file I need ot edit but I really do not know what that file is called.

I am using FC 4 with a KDE3.4 desktop.

Thanks for you help in advance.

don't really know kde that well, but can't you just rightclick on the desktop and select "starter" in the optionlist
a starter is what MS calls a shortcut
then you just enter de path to the drive

This is very easy to do in KDE:

Use konqueror to navigate to the drive or directory you want a shortcut to eg mnt/windows/documents. Left-click the documents directory in konq, and drag it to your desktop. Let go of the button, choose "Link Here". An icon wil be put on your desktop. Clicking it will open the mnt/windows/documents directory. If you do not like the icon you have been given for this link, Right-click it and choose "Properties". Click the icon in the new window to see some others. Choose a new one. If you do not like the name the link has been given now is the time to change it. Then click OK. That's it.
