How can I install lilo to /dev/hdc

I'm replacing a disk, and need to install lilo on the new disk while running from the old.

The procedure described in the Lilo HOW-TO (4. Installing hdc to boot as hda) seems to be what I want to do, but when using chroot, lilo can't see the device i'm installing to (/dev/hdc).

Any pointers?

Hello,

Do your chroot environnement have a valid /dev directory? I mean that you probably need to mount/create a valid /dev directory to see a valid /dev/hdc block device

That would probably help, but I don't know how the /dev tree gets created.

*google*

Ok, so there's a script called MAKEDEV that supposedly creates the /dev hierarchy. However, if I do chroot /mnt/newhd; MAKEDEV; it tells me it "can't read /proc/devices" which is perfectly understandable I guess...

*google^2*

I can create a proc hierarchy by simply doing 'mkdir /proc; mount /proc'? That's good to know.

Well, I'll fumble about a bit more now. Thanks for the hint.

In the lilo.conf file there is one line:
boot=/dev/hd_drive_you_want

This line determines to which drive lilo will install itself to. Edit your lilo.conf file to point to the drive you want it to be installed to then type "lilo" at the command prompt to update it (as root).
