How Can I Increase Net Speed On Ubuntu?! XP Is Faster - Weird!
I got ubuntu as my host, and XP as guest. My internet speed is faster on XP (guest) than on ubuntu (host). This doesn't make sense. Is there a way to tweak my net connection on ubuntu to increase its internet speed?

What so you mean, it's slower? According to what you say I assume you have XP installed in a VM. So I assume that it's sharing the same Net connection. So it can't be.
But since you are saying it is,... (don't know based on what) may be your XP VM is consuming bandwidth already. Check whether if there's any other bandwidth hog programs running. Perhaps you could use a download accelerator (if you are downloading) like MultiGet, D4X, DTA! or ProZilla, etc. |
How have you measured this bandwidth? Is it measured on the LAN, on the Internet, etc.? What tool have you used, and what numbers are you getting?

In case this isn't absolutely obvious, the algorithm for dealing with problems is:
Are you running anything anything that caches look-ups? (Bind/named would be the most common, but something smaller like djbdns, maradns or dnsmasq would probably be better choices). Equally, it is possible that you have multiple ways of resolving names specified and you are waiting for one to time out before checking one that might work (resolv.conf, nsswitch). |

If it's firefox, try setting network.dns.disableIPv6 to true in firefox's about:config |

I don't know how to configure opera as I don't use it (tried it years ago though). Install firefox with your package manager. Open it. Put about:config into the address bar, press RETURN In the "Filter" Box put ipv6 If you double-click the "Value" for network.dns.disableIPv6 it'll change from false to true Close firefox Reopen it. Any better? If not, it was at least worth a try. I suspect salasi is on the right track (DNS resolution problems). FF was very slow to open new links until I applied that setting: FF was trying an IPV6 DNS lookup (which my ISP does not currently support) first, waiting ..... .... ... .. ! for it to time out and then doing an IPV4 DNS lookup, which eventually worked. |

Thanks guys! Appreciate all your help.

Wouldn't simply blacklisting ipv6 be the easiest?
