Also, if it come sdown to me reformatting and reinstalling linux and xp (xp first, format linux drive and install linux) could i perhaps save some of my linux files/folders to preserve the configurations i had done - i.e. alsa with specific soundcard, checkinstall, certain kernel changes? If so, what/where are they?

Thanks for urs reply and making my direction in proper way of touble shooting,
Now Linux has start works ,
i install new lilo version 22.5.7....
i dont know how its stat work, i trun my linuc machine after 2 days and last time i was very tired to repair boot loader. i remeber fme few steps which i collect from command history in rescue mode.

Steps
1-i install grub but fail to boot

2- then i download and insntall some utilites for grub recomend in grub installf file like automake<http://www.gnu.org/software/make/make.html>, bcc (http://gcc.gnu.org), binutils<http://sourceware.cygnus.com/binutils/>
Texinfo<http://www.gnu.org/software/texinfo/texinfo.html>

3-then agin reinstall grub this time grub load but in very bad display and still failto boot then i did remove grub with make distclean and make clean

3-rplace MBR with fdisk/mbr

4- make lilo.conf in orignal condition, then untar latest lilo and jut copy lilo file in /sbin folder
then i shutt off computer and trun on it after 2 days and i was ready to reinstall linux, i was wonder that lilo is working its view is differnts its smal red box but x windows and evry thing working fine.

i dont know how i saved my linux which take more then one mont for configration.

some guied me now which linux system files are importent to safe in this kind of creash time.

now i am still there my xp is running on an other disk?

and still want to add windows xp in lilo
