i made a new custom application launcher in the gnome panel
the application need to run with a terminal
AND it need several environmental variables
i set the variables in my .bashrc

Export them to the shell and its children.

$ export VAR1=blah ; export VAR2=mmm ; some-custom-app.bash

... or source in .bashrc

$ . ~/.bashrc ; some-custom-app.bash

The first option is probably better.
