How can an X Window connection be productive?

I've tried to connect to my main computer using my laptop, using the X forwarding option. I've done this over my wireless network, which is of 54mbps. I couldn't use it productively, there was like 1 second delay for everything I clicked.

Why X exists, and can it be made productive? Am I doing something wrong?

Don't know. I use remote X often and have no problems. I do not use it over SSH and I have gigabit network.

could you test over ssh to see if the delay is because of my network? if so, I'll buy a faster router
