How about changing window managers in KDE?
 

Has anyone done this? I would probably use KDE as long as I could use Enlightenment as a window manager, but I haven't seen that used before. I've heard tell that you could use E in KDE 2.6 by replacing "kwin" with "enlightenment" in the startup file, but I run version 3 with Mandrake 9.0, and that setup is a bit different.

I think that is in Mandrake Control Center under Hardware then Display Manager Chooser.

I haven't ever changed it but I have read where others have.

The Display Manager chooser just lets you choose the login manager. When you boot up KDE, it still goes with the default window manager.

As a Mandrake User, you should run Mandrake Control Centre, and select KDM as your login manager, but UNSELECT automatic login. KDM is easily the best login in my view, whatever desktop you use. When you startup again, you will get the opening KDM screen you should be able to select Enlightenment if it is installed from a drop-down list.

If it is installed but not in the list, check out Login Manager in KDE Control Centre...

What are the differences anyway? Ever crash one before by changing the manager? I ask because I may try that too. :cool:

I've crashed a few programs but never by using KDM. If you load up Mandrake, you get an automatic login straight into KDE or GNOME and you don't see the xDM until you exit. The way to correct that is not to log straight in from Mandrake Control Centre, but use a manager like KDM. If you want to boot straight in without an opening screen or password, then use KDE settings and KDM itself sorts that aspect out instead of Mandrake. It took me months to figure that out.

Okay, I changed to KDM in Mandrake Control Center (I was using Mdkkdm before), but when I restart X, the Mdkkdm screen just comes up again. I even tried un-installing mdkkdm and it still appears.

Reboot maybe???

If you don't want to reboot, the only way to stop mdkkdm (or kdm or gdm come to that) is by switching to a terminal (Ctrl-Alt-F1) log in as root and type:

killall mdkkdm

Because as long as one of these Desktop Managers is running it will force X to restart and display its own menu.

Then you type in

kdm

and off you go!
