hotwayd unexpected response in pass_cmd

I have installed and configured hotwayd on my Slack10 machine.

The problem is when I try to access hotmail with KMail via hotwayd, I get:

Cannot login to 127.0.0.1. The password may be wrong.
The server said: "Unexpected response in pass_cmd"

Is anyone with outlook express able to access hotmail currently without difficulty?

Is there login or authentication specifications I need to make?

I would try fetchmail as well, but I've never used it before and right now I'm getting a headache... this is not the first problem in the last 24h. If someone wants to post an example for fetchmail I'll give it a shot.

Given that Microsoft is discontinuing the access to Hotmail via Outlook and Outlook Express, I wouldn't be surprised that hotwayd has stopped working with Hotmail.

Yes, I did visit hotmail.com -> about hotmail -> FAQ and found this

To protect our users from the increasing amount of unsolicited junk e-mail or spam sent from MSN Hotmail accounts through Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Outlook Express, we have reluctantly had to restrict the new use of Microsoft Outlook and Microsoft Outlook Express to subscribers.

But it does say "new use of Microsoft Outlook..." Does that mean that older accounts, like mine which has been active for many years, can still use httpmail?

That is why I would like to double check with Outlook Express users to see if they are able to access hotmail or if has recently stopped working. I have never used hotwayd successfully and so I can't be sure if the problem is local.

Thankx though.

The article I read said that (1) new users would have no access to their accounts via Outlook or OE to begin with, and that (2) existing users would gradually be "moved" to that stage over the next few months. A friend of mine already cannot access his Hotmail account, which he has had for more than a few years, via Outlook Express anymore. (And he is a Microsoft employee!!!)

Here's Microsoft's knowledge base on it.

No kidding. Wow, that sucks. I guess it's time to give up then. Those monopolizing bastards are unfortunately probably going to score millions of subscriptions from the average hotmail user on this one. That would probably make a good thread actually.

Thanks a lot for that link and the input daihard. Much appreciated. I guess I would have known this was coming if I read any of the emails from hotmail...

I also suppose this renders the hotwayd suit obsolete.
