hot to make vlc defualt media player
i was just wanting to know how do i make vlc media player my default player? for example if i have a song or movie that i want to play if i click on it always chooses a differnt media player. i can go to properties and change it, but its only for that one item, i wanna have it where if i just open any song or movie vlc will open.

is that possible and can you tell me how?

and i have ydl 6.1

assuming you are using kde all you should have to do is right click, choose open with, choose other browse thru the list to vlc and remember to check the "remember application association for this type of file" box

I use fedora core 9 with kde 4, and if you are lucky enough to use kde 4, in K>System>System preferences on the Advanced tab, there's a File associations app that manages those things

PD: The system preferences shortcut may be somewhere else besides than in K>System but it surely is in the K menu on kde 4

if you aren't in kde 4, bad luck buddy, but I don't remember how to change that things, but I remember doing it like the guy above said

hope it helps!

For KDE 3.x.y:
Run kcontrol from a terminal.
Kde Components -> File associations
In "Find filename pattern", put the filetype eg mp3
Expand the "known types" tree
Click on MP3
In the right window, you'll see an application preference order for that file type.
Click on VLC, [If it's not there, ADD it] then move it up to the top of the list
Click "Apply"
You should be set

Repeat for other filetypes.
