Host found but no data record of requested type

We've got trouble with Postfix returning an error "Host found but no data record of requested type" intermittently on random domains:

8634069C0A6 2313 Mon Aug 28 10:08:46 grahame@tbc.org.nz
(Name service error for name=mx-us.maxnet.net.nz type=A: Host found but no data record of requested type)
kingskiwi@maxnet.co.nz

These messages have also included high volume domains (like hotmail.com) which makes us think it is a local DNS issue

Any clues anyone?

Print your BIND configuration files /etc/named.conf and /var/named zone files so we can see.

EV1 Servers have checked the DNS and say that is most likely a POSTFIX issue:
"I did numerous DNS queries from your box using our nameservers. The resolver configuration on your server is correct and I had no problem with any of the queries I made. This leads me to believe the problem stems from Postfix, which is unsupported."

In /etc/named.conf, under 'options { };' it helps if you include your 'forwarders { };' with the IP addresses of your ISP DNS server - the ones you get in your DSL modem when you connect via PPPoE. It puts less work on DNS and resolves much faster for small networks.

Edit your /etc/resolv.con and make sure it has only the following line:

nameserver 127.0.0.1
