Question Homemade NAS Server

I have been looking at alot of NAS servers and have come to a odd conclusion.

They ALL run Linux and they all apear to be OTS (Off The Self) hardware (1U units).

I am looking to build one myself that can be administered via a web browser and offer multi platform support. Basically like all the rest do.

Does anyone know of a Distro or FAQ on building a home grown unit?
