Angry home page problems!!!

don't know if this belongs in this forum, but this is where it is.

installed several updates yesterday offered by linux or ubuntu, now problems have arisen.

after entering firefox, i went to 'edit > preferences' and found my home page nowhere in sight. (i have been using this same home page several months now with no problems).
my home page has been changed? how? by who? why? it is now 'chome://ubufox/content/startpage.html' or 'http://start.ubuntu.com/8.10/', neither of which i want.
i typed in my homepage 'edition.cnn.com', then pressed the restore default button (as the ubuntu manual on home page says to) and my entered home page was overlaid with 'http://start.ubuntu.com/8.10/'?
so what is going on?

i want my home page back to where it belongs.

any help, please? thanks. len tyree.http://http.cdnlayer.com/lq/images/q...s_lq/icon8.gif
