home network mail server
 

Hi all,

I'm attempting to set up my home network as such:

Internet - > Redhat9 box -> 2x Windows boxen

I'd like to use the linux box as my internal mail server (downloading and distributing mail for multiple accounts for multiple users) - my wife and I have seperate email accounts at seperate external pop3 providers, and I'd like to use the linux box as a go-between.

Is it possible to use the linux box to download/upload our mail, caching sent mail if the outside internet connection is down, and keeping the external mail accounts fully-downloaded when online?

I was also wondering if, using the same setup, we could internally email each other via the linux box without it having to leave the internal network?

I'm sorry if this is hard to understand.. it's hard for me to explain it properly!

Yes, Install a Redhat base system, Install Qmail and a few other utilities from the qmail homepage.. www.qmail.org and also install fetchmail (This will fetch from pop accounts)

You can then pipe your mail through AV/SPAM filters and then into your qmail boxes.. get *and* send emails through the box as your primary pop/smtp server.

will this qmail and other tools / fetchmail etc allow me to send mail using my standard outgoing email account as the 'source' address, and my wife the same for her email, or would our incoming/outgoing addresses change?

you could also setup sendmail and use it only for your home network. The config is easy. And yes, your addresses would change, as you would be sending to your RH box rather than your ISP for both scenarios. (please correct me if i am wrong).
