/home and install/downloads

Ok, I just switched from Windoze, so I apologize for the lack of knowledge with this great operating system. Ok, after first installing and setting Mandrake 10.0 up, I started reading about installing different programs. It seemed a bit complicated, so I thought I'd begin with some RTMs. I thought I had installed them, but couldn't find where they said they were installed to. The I downloaded some files off of xchat, and now can't find where they're located. Everything I read said they should be in an xchat folder within /home but the only folder there is My Docs and such. I also realized that home was autoconfigured to be on a seperate partition? Eh yah, so I figured that's it. So where are my files, and is there a way I can make it so things save under home like (I'm guessing) they're suppose to. Thanks!

your xchat files are in /home/.xchat

notice the '.'

that means theyre hidden. If you're using command line, ls -a to see it
If you're using a gui, look around in the settings.

As for your RPM's (by rtm you _did_ mean rpm, right?), they are installed wherever they want to be. Ususally /usr/bin or /usr/local/bin for the actuall application, but data files get put wherever they may go, /etc, /usr/share, and so on.... Say you installed irssi, just pop open a terminal and type irssi. You'll find it.
