Hissing sound in Fedora Core 2

Yesterday I installed Fedora Core 2 on a new harddisk. Everything worked fine, but after I installed XINE from source, there is always a hissing sound on the right sound channel. Sound still works, but the hissing sounds like an amplifier turned up way too much (it isnt)!
It's especially annoying when no sound is playing, then the hissing gets the loudest.

I think it has something to do with the ALSA ballance settings, but I only find alsamixer, which doesnt help. Where could a sound setting that causes this hissing be found?
Thanks for any help!
