Hi am new or have some serious dementia. Synaptic Package Manager, understanding it.

I used to know how to do stuff in Synaptic, I run Mint Rebecca.

My VLC got a bit corrupted as it wouldn't release my flash drive movie, and now won't open like it used to, won't do anything.

So after a year of not using synaptic i try to uninstall VLC and ... am having much trouble with the layout of synaptic itself.

I know I need to ask intelligent questions so if we just use VLC as an example, how exactly do I understand all the tabs and things in synaptic, am looking for almost a synaptic tutorial. I searched that kind of thing online and didn't have much joy.

I tried to read the help inside synaptic and find it is either not working properly or not helping me find the boundaries between what is installed and what is ''out there''.

Very sorry if this is as painful for the reader as it is for me the thinker.

Please type slowly

Generally, installed packages will have a mark to the left of the package name.

If you right-click on a package and select "install," you will be notified if that package is already installed. If you select to install something and it has dependencies, Synaptic will display a list of the dependencies.

If you right-click on an installed package, you will get choices to "remove" or "completely remove" the package. "Completely remove" removes the configuration files, not just the program.

These may help:

Sometimes the order in which packages are listed can be a little confusing. Clicking on the "Name" column will sort them by name, making navigating the list a little easier if you know the name of the package you are looking for.

I almost never use the tabs and categories. I rely on the search feature. You can search by package name, package type (e. g. "editor"). In the case you cite, I would have just searched for "VLC."

That was really very helpful. Exactly what I was looking for. At first it didn't seem like it was completely uninstalled, but I restarted Synaptic and upon reinstall VLC seems to be working effectively.

Problem solved thank you
