Hi guys!!! Will I be able to upgrade to the next future version of ubuntu (8.04) if I use Closed Edition Source (CSE) of Virtual Box to virtualize it with XP? I read somewhere that it's not possible. Please clarify this for me.
If not possible, what VMs out there can I use to install XP where: 1) I'm able to upgrade to the next version of Ubuntu 7.10 and 2) I'm able to use USB on XP and Ubuntu with no problems.
USB support for the virtual machine was one of the main reasons I chose VMWare server. I don't know if I would call it completely problem free, but USB thumb drives work nicely on both host and guest OS.
hangdog42, thanks for the reply. One question for you is, do you think I will face problems with USB connectivity under VirtualBox CSE??? I want to be able to connect my PSP within the XP guest environment. Thanks!
I haven't used VirtualBox, so I'm really not sure. I know one of the ways they tempt you to plunk down cash for the commercial version is to include USB support in that, but not the free version. So if USB support doesn't work with your PSP in CSE, I would think that you would have a valid route to get support from the VirtualBox people.
They got usb support in the non-GPL version (still free-as-beer) but I doubt it will fully work with a PSP in a XP guest system.I don't even know what a PSP is supposed to be doing via usb.
It probably will do the same thing it did with my cell phone:
Load the usb device as a mass storage device like a thumb drive and you can work with the storage.
I think that depends how the connected device is seen by the host system - meaning Linux sees my nokia as mass storage and gets forwarded as such.Windows then can't do much with fancy apps (like nvidia software updater)since it only gets to see the mass storage.
If Linux recognizes the PSP as PSP things might work.
Please don't quote me on this but that what I ended up thinking when I tried to get my cell working with a xp host - might be a 100% wrong but nobody had any better ideas so far.
crashmeister, thanks for the reply. So, you're not 100% sure if there's USB support under XP or Ubuntu. That makes both of us. I just want XP (guest) or Ubuntu (host) to recognize 2 things: 1) my PSP and 2) my razr cellphone. That's all. I got software that I need for my PSP and razr that's window-based, not linux based, so it I doubt the software will work in Ubuntu.
crashmeister, the ONLY reason why I want to virtualize my Ubuntu with XP is to enjoy the benefits of connecting my devices through USB that won't be possible otherwise under Ubuntu. I want to be able to unzip and upload games (ISO) and movies to my PSP.
As for my motorola razr, I want to save entries in my phonebook so that if I lose my cell, I have my phonebook on my computer as backup. How's this for an idea... since my razr syncs with Outlook Express, I can install Outlook Express with Wine. Then, I can connect via USB my razr to sync with Outlook Express and save my phonebook that way. Let me know what you think about this and the PSP thing... Thanks !
crashmeister, thanks once again for your reply. I got some news for you. I downloaded and installed an app called moto4lin today. The only problem is that the program won't allow me to upload any mp3 songs to my razr which is what its built for. Have you head of it before?
I really don't know - got a nokia and don't sync anything anyway.I didn't mention moto4lin because their site doesn't even load here most of the time and if it loads it's full of spam.
I realize kmobiletools ain't the best way to go with a gnome desktop - you might want to open a new thread with something like 'synchronize razr' in the title.
