Question Here's a tough one...

When I start up my xserver (startx) I get a gray screen with a black x for a cursor. The x then turns into an arrow (so far so good) and then the xserver crashes!

Upon examination of the log file (/var/log/XFre*) I noticed two things of interest.

"Could not init font path element unix/:7100, removing from list!"

and

something about DRI not being able to be used with tdfx...

The second error I don't think is a big deal (after all, the video does start). The only reason I listed it is because it had (EE) next to it. Oddly, the first error only has a (WW) next to it. Anyway, upon searching the forums, everybody with the first error also had an error about not being able to load some default cursor or fixed font. I do not have this error. They also suggest running the font server. I am.

About the only thing I can think of is something screwed up my system when I installed it. It mentioned something about me having to change the /etc/X11/XF86* file, but I don't remember what it said. I think it wanted me to do something that started with a d and had something to do with fonts. I don't know... Sorry if this info doesn't help. Anyway, if anybody can give me any ideas, that'd be great.

Okay, I just did some searching around and I think the problem has to do with a package called defoma. (Debian Font Manager). Anybody know what I have to do?

I don't know what the problem is for you, but I do have a little comment.
I also have a warning about a font being unable to find, doesn't appear to be a problem, because all is running well.
Also warnings(WW) are never a problem as far as i know. errors(EE) are, so i think you should look more into the DRI problem. Maybe that is needed to switch to the next screen-mode or something?

tdfx is the driver for 3dfx (Voodoo) video cards. If that's the type of card you have, then I know that Xfree86.org has very well written documentation on configuring X for this (and other) cards.

I don't know what the problem was, but I solved it by uninstalling and reinstalling X.
