help with WINE plz?

i'm trying to install and configure wine and i'm having a few problems that i cant figure out but seem like things that somebody here could answer:

1. when i install wine without the "wineinstall" script that comes with the source(i.e. using a .tgz or just compiling it myself) it doesnt make a config file in the ~/.wine folder that it creates. wine works, but will the changes i make be used if i just copy the sample file to ~/.wine and make the changes i need?

2. Frankscorner says i should be able to get half life and macromedia mx programs running and i cant. i follow the directions on frankscorner.org and it comes up but hangs when i try to start a game. macromedia doesnt get past the install shield loading. the first time i installed wine i had dcom95, but this time i dont cuz the link to download it on frankscorner.org is broken, it might have something to do with that.

3. i've uninstalled and reinstalled wine several times and somewhere along the line it copied all these files to my root directory. is this normal? i thought the root directory was only supposed to hold the main folders for the filesystem like /home and /etc. I dont really like the idea of it being all cluttered program files.

SOMEBODY PLZ HELP ME I'VE POSTED THESE QUESTIONS LIKE 4 TIMES EACH AND NEVER GET ANY RESPONSES AT ALL aagGAGHHHHHHH DONT YOU REALIZE I'M A ????????? HELP ME PLZ!

btw: i'm running slackware 10 and the wine vintage is 9142004 and i'd really like some help

1) yes just copy the config file into ur .wine directory and make changes

i have these in my .wine folder
c [folder]
config
system.reg
userdef.reg
user.reg

2) do u have a dhcp or static ip ??? if u use a proxy server u might wanna setup the proxy in ur .bashrc file and see if it works.....

by adding --->http_proxy=http://192.168.1.1:8080/ ; export http_proxy [or what ever is ur proxy ip]

and open a new terminal and try running the app...

i donno how effective the above step will be... but try .. and also try setting the proxy ip in the app ur trying to run also...

3)

dcom 95 -->http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

dcom 98
-->http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/d...displaylang=en

4) yes its perfectly normal....

Best of luck...

thank you . when i say it hangs when i try to start a game i mean a regular old single player game. not just hang though, it seems to be unable to show the next menu that comes up and asks what difficulty level i want the game to be. the macromedia i am trying to install is actually macromedia studio, not just flash mx or dreamweaver mx, so that might be the problem. it has an error loading the install setup program(i dont know if it's installshield because it hangs before i ever get to see it and i cant remember from when i installed it on windows).

i've been trying the cvs cedega and had problems too, but i wanted to get my questions about regular wine answered first and maybe make a new thread about my cedega problems. also, atm im using an old voodoo 3 16 mb card cuz my nvidia fx busted and i'm waiting for them to send me a new one. i'd rather configure my system for my regular settings(with the good card) before i go off trying to solve problems that may be related to this old card that i'm planning on putting back in the attic in about a week the only annoying thing about cedega is that the cvs version forces me to use cracks(which i normall prefer cuz it's usuall faster to load stuff straight off the hd) but for testing purposes it's annoying to have to load everything onto my hd and try to get a crack to work as well. i think things will get better once my new card comes and if they dont i saw some pretty sweet looking native linux games like enemy territory and kohan plus i've always got zsnes. ill probably start thinking of my windows box much the same way i treat my xbox, playstation, etc. lol
