Question Help with Wine

I want to get Wine working as I have just come into the world of linux. I have installed it and it works fine (tested notepad etc..). I have pointed the config file to my exisiting windows xp partition. How do I install things etc and other things?

Thanks in advance

Mkae sure you run wineprefixcreate which will make a .wine directory drop a Install.exe (or equivelent) to that directory and execute

wine "/home/yourname/.wine/drive_c/Install.exe"

And you should get an installer which will install the program to your virtual windows drive in .wine.

You may need to install Install Shield or other windows dependencies for the installers though.

Using winetools (http://freshmeat.net/projects/winetools/) really helps if you can get a package.

I would seriously doubt that MSN messanger would work under Wine. Microsoft has a way of writing non-portable proprietary code that won't work under Wine. If its MSN you want you can use Gaim, Kopete, or AMSN which are the linux native equivelents.

Same with "wine /path/to/exe/file". Remember some things work others don't. If you really want I guess the best option now is cedega but it's not free Or get games that are compatible already.

If it's on the CD you'll probably point it to the setup.exe or something like that. If you get far enough in the installshield (so if it hasn't crashed by then yet) then you can set where you want it installed, which will automatically be at least on your fake_windows or your real windows partition depending on how you chose to do it.

Could someone propose me a piece of script that would automate this behind a menu item in kde?
