i downloaded wine-20040408-mdk.i586.rpm so i could start playing my Diablo 2 and it's expansion, as well as gunbound, both of which are not for linux. i'm not all that great at rpm's but here's what i did (when i got there):

[ronen@localhost Documents]$ rpm -i wine-20040408-mdk.i586.rpm
error: cannot open lock file ///var/lib/rpm/RPMLOCK in exclusive mode
error: cannot open Packages database in /var/lib/rpm

You need to be "root" user

First, some background. Linux lets several users have accounts on the same machine. Your account name appears to be "ronen". Only one user is allowed to install software, and this is the special super-user, "root". The "root" account has the power to do anything at all to the machine, which can be dangerous, and so it is unusual to remain logged in as root for long.

In order to install Red Hat packages you need to be "root". You can switch to root using the command "su", which will ask you for the root password (you created one when you installed linux). Then you can type "rpm -ivh wine-20040408-mdk.i586.rpm" to install wine.

If you don't know the root password, you can still run wine by compiling it yourself, but you will be the only user able to run it.
