Help with SANE, parallel scanner

Hi. I have a UMAX Astra 1220P parallel scanner, which is very basically supported by SANE, but which I can't figure out how to make work in Redhat 9. I did look up the HOWTO on SANE's website for this scanner, but I don't know how to proceed, since I already have SANE installed via RPM on my system. Do I need to recompile the whole thing or just apply a patch, or just enable an option, or what? I just need some personalized help on this one- thanks!
